During the Saturday talks, Zarif and Ould Cheikh Ahmed discussed the latest developments in Yemen.
They particularly underlined the need to end the humanitarian disaster in the Arab country and find comprehensive political solutions to the crisis.
The UN envoy also held talks with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari, during which the two sides disucssed new initiatives aimed at putting an end to the crisis in the Arab country.
Saudi Arabia has been waging war against Yemen since March 2015 in a bid to eliminate the Houthi Ansarullah movement and reinstall a Riyadh-friendly former president. Neither objectives have been achieved by the Saudi-led coalition so far, and the war has spiraled into a humanitarian crisis.
Stephen O'Brien, the UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs, has stated that the “man-made” outbreak of cholera in Yemen which has affected over 300,000 people was “a direct result” of the Saudi-led aggression.
